Understanding Cannabis Genetics

Every cannabis strain has a genetic lineage — a family tree that traces back through generations of selective breeding. Most modern strains are crosses (hybrids) of two or more parent strains, combining desirable traits like potency, flavor, growth characteristics, and effects.

In our visualization, purple nodes represent indica-dominant strains, known for relaxing body effects and compact growth. Gold nodes are sativa-dominant strains, prized for uplifting cerebral effects and tall plants. Green nodes are hybrids that blend both genetics.

Larger nodes are strains available in the DSS Genetics catalogue — click them to view full strain details and purchase. Smaller nodes are parent/landrace strains that contribute genetics to our products but aren't sold individually.

Key Genetic Families

Some strains appear repeatedly as parents because their genetics are exceptionally valuable. OG Kush, Northern Lights, Skunk #1, and Haze are among the most influential parent strains in cannabis breeding — the foundation of hundreds of modern varieties. Autoflowering strains typically include Ruderalis genetics, which provides the auto-flowering trait without requiring light cycle changes.
