Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in cannabis, found in over 40% of all strains. It is responsible for the earthy, musky aroma that many associate with cannabis. Myrcene is known for its sedative, couch-lock effects and is a key contributor to the distinction between indica and sativa experiences. Research suggests Myrcene may enhance THC absorption across the blood-brain barrier, making strains with high Myrcene content feel more potent. It also shows anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, making it valuable for pain management. Strains with Myrcene levels above 0.5% tend to produce noticeably sedating effects, while lower levels contribute to a more balanced experience.

Myrcene (beta-myrcene, C₁₀H₁₆) is a monoterpene and the single most abundant terpene found in cannabis. Across thousands of lab-tested strains, Myrcene appears as the dominant terpene in over 40% of commercially available cultivars, making it the backbone of the cannabis aroma and effect profile. Its molecular structure consists of an open-chain hydrocarbon with two double bonds, which gives it both its distinctive scent and its biological activity.

In nature, Myrcene is far from exclusive to cannabis. It is a major component of hops (Humulus lupulus) — cannabis's closest botanical relative — which explains why some beer varieties share aromatic notes with certain cannabis strains. It is also found in high concentrations in mangoes, lemongrass, thyme, bay laurel, and wild basil. The folk remedy of eating a mango 45 minutes before consuming cannabis to enhance the high has a basis in science: mangoes contain significant Myrcene, and pre-loading the body with this terpene may indeed accelerate and intensify THC absorption.

Myrcene's boiling point sits at approximately 167 degrees Celsius (332 degrees Fahrenheit), making it one of the first terpenes to volatilize during smoking or vaporization. This means that lower vaporization temperatures will preserve more Myrcene in the vapor, while combustion (smoking) destroys a significant portion of it. For users seeking maximum Myrcene benefits, vaporization at 160-170 degrees Celsius is optimal.

The aroma profile of Myrcene is complex: predominantly earthy and musky, with secondary notes of ripe tropical fruit, clove, and red grape. When you smell a cannabis strain and detect that classic "dank" or "skunky" undertone, Myrcene is usually the primary contributor.
