What is Linalool?

Linalool is the same terpene that gives lavender its renowned calming properties. In cannabis, it contributes a delicate floral aroma and is associated with strong anti-anxiety and sedative effects. Clinical research shows promise for Linalool as an anti-convulsant, making it potentially valuable for patients with epilepsy. It also demonstrates analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Strains high in Linalool are often recommended for evening use, anxiety management, and as sleep aids.

Lavender's Secret: The Shared Compound Behind Cannabis Calm

Linalool (C10H18O) is a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol found in over 200 plant species — but it is best known as the primary aromatic compound in lavender. The calming effect that lavender has been valued for across cultures for thousands of years is, in large part, a Linalool effect. And the exact same molecule appears in cannabis, contributing the same calming properties to strains that carry it.

In cannabis, Linalool typically appears at concentrations between 0.05% and 0.3% of dry weight. It is rarely the outright dominant terpene (Myrcene and Caryophyllene usually hold that position), but it frequently appears as a secondary or tertiary terpene in indica-dominant and relaxation-focused strains. When it does appear, even at relatively low concentrations, its effects are disproportionately significant due to the potency of its neurological activity.

The aroma of Linalool is distinctly floral and sweet, with undertones of spice and citrus. In cannabis, Linalool contributes a softness and complexity to the scent profile that rounds out the earthier notes of Myrcene and the spiciness of Caryophyllene. Strains that smell like lavender, fresh linens, or sweet herbs are expressing their Linalool content.

Beyond lavender and cannabis, Linalool is found in significant quantities in birch bark, coriander, sweet basil, mint, cinnamon, and some citrus species. The average person consumes approximately 2 grams of Linalool per year through food, cosmetics, and household products — making it one of the most widely encountered terpenes in daily life. Its safety profile is well-established through this extensive exposure history.

Linalool exists as two enantiomers: R-linalool (licareol, with a woody, lavender scent) and S-linalool (coriandrol, with a sweeter, more floral scent). Cannabis predominantly produces R-linalool, the form more strongly associated with sedative and anxiolytic effects. This is the same form dominant in lavender essential oil, reinforcing the biological basis for the cannabis-lavender connection.
